"This place has known the yoke and the rod of oppression. How often has been heard in these streets the cry of the innocent! Also the great church built over the birthplace of the savior is like a fortress stormed by the struggles of the times. The birthplace of Jesus is always in the shadow of the cross."
Juan Pablo II, Jubileo 2000
During the Jubilee Year 2000, the determination of the Palestinian
National Authority, together with the Pope urged a project to restore
the holy city of Bethlehem. The call was international in character,
with everyone working together to help. The goal was not to build walls
fallen back and only reinforce the material foundation of the city, but
efforts should be concentrated mainly in working to overcoming the long
road of sorrow and injustice who has experienced the Palestinian
people.
Chilean entrepreneurs with Palestinian origin Jose Said and Mario
Alberto Kassis Nazal heard the call and traveled to Bethlehem to see
what they could do. Upon his return, motivated by more than an
immediate collaboration, they decided to raise a case with a future: to
show the identity of a people profoundly wise, hardworking and
commit to development, culture and education of new generations. On 31
July 2001, in Chile was officially born Bethlehem 2000 Palestinian
Foundation. The objectives of the Foundation, as its chairman, Joseph
Said, is "to unite our efforts, talents and abilities in a collective
and coordinated initiative to revitalize our Palestinian essence with
its customs and its hallmarks. And also accompany the Palestinian
people holding from this small corner of the world a bridge of
solidarity with them, our brothers. "
