Urban Myths on Ophthalmologist
Thus, conventional wisdom typically has handles on scientific basis and be assertive, or based on false premises and not turn from it: only beliefs.
In his column on Medicine, Dr. Michel Hirano Mehech this time dealing with other myths related to his specialty strongly rooted in popular belief. "As the vision is considered the most fragile and precious sense “argues, "any factor that harms or benefits the eye health is considered important the population.”Here are their comments.
Dr. Michel Mehech Hirane.
Eat carrots is good for your vision.
Since always we have heard that if you eat carrots it will help to have a good
vision as it contains high amounts of beta-carotene. But, while in no way is harmful, it is not
proved that a high consumption of them do well for the vision or at least
improve any visual alteration. First
myth down.
Pass many hours in front a TV or computer is harmful for your sight.
It is popular beliefs think that if our children or us, the adults, get
to close to the screen or monitor, or if we see with less or too much light, we
will suffer some damage or visual disease, which is not true. The exaggerated use of the monitors generates
tiredness o temporary visual dryness, but is not a real alteration; the same
way the excess of video-plays can alter the normal and balanced development of
a child, but not necessarily cause eye diseases.
Second myth down.
- Frequently head aches are produced by bad vision
Some people attribute the headaches to sight problems, despite being much more
frequent tension origin, caused by muscle contractions which tend to be trivial
in almost 90% of cases. In the presence a persistent headache, we must make a
causal study including an eye examination to discard an error of refraction
(astigmatism, myopia or hyperopic) or other simple condition to diagnose and
can contribute to perpetuate this condition but rarely eye are the primary
causes of headaches.
Third myth down.
Excessive sun exposure can damage our sight.
Effectively, ultraviolet radiation (UV) damages the skin and leads to a cancer and premature aging and cumulative UV are a proven risk factor for increased incidence of cataracts and macular degeneration related to age, both cases important progressive vision loss in adults. Thus, prolonged and repeated exposure to the sun without protection can induce cancer to the eye and the eyelids. The use of a good eyeglass, with at least 400 filters UV, should be the norm in months of heavy exposure to ultraviolet radiation. The absolute recommendation is to purchase in serious stores to ensure good quality glass and sunscreen provided.
Fourth proven myth.
The use of glasses bought in the “street” are bad for the sight and damages the eyes?
The truth is that the optical glasses sold in the informal commerce are bad
quality and most of the times are made with defective crystals. In occasions this affects the good reading Urban
Myths on Ophthalmologist. Another type of optical glasses must be prescribed by
an ophthalmologist.
